Contrast ratios follow the official WCAG 2.2 formula. Passing contrast is one part of accessibility, not the whole of it. Read our accessibility approach for the rest.

Questions

Good to
know.

What is a good color contrast ratio?

WCAG sets 4.5:1 as the minimum for normal body text (AA) and 7:1 for the stricter AAA level. Large text (about 24px, or 18.66px bold) can pass AA at 3:1. Higher is always more readable. For body copy, aim for at least 4.5:1.

Why does contrast matter for my website?

Low-contrast text is hard to read for everyone and genuinely inaccessible for people with low vision, which hurts usability, conversions, and can create legal accessibility exposure. Good contrast is one of the simplest, highest-impact accessibility wins, and it's part of how we build every site.
